📜Origin Story

  • Mind-born son of Brahma: Atri was born from the eyes of Brahma according to Vishnu Purana (I.7). The Bhagavata Purana (3.12.22) lists him among the original manasaputras (mind-born sons).
  • Name meaning: "Atri" derives from the Sanskrit root meaning "one who has overcome the three" — referring to transcendence of the three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas) or the three states of consciousness (waking, dreaming, deep sleep). Also "a-tri" = beyond the three.
  • One of the Saptarishis in almost every listed manvantara — making him one of the most consistent cosmic sages.
  • Associated with the number three — his penance invoked the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva) all three of whom blessed him.

(Bhagavata Purana 4.1, Markandeya Purana): Atri performed severe tapasya alongside his wife Anasuya. His penance was so powerful that fire emanated from his head and reached the heavens. Impressed, the Trimurti — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — all appeared and offered boons.

Eclipse Rescue

(Rigveda V.40.5-9): During a solar eclipse, the demon Svarbhanu swallowed the Sun. Atri performed specific mantras and rituals that rescued the Sun, restoring light to the world. This is referenced in Rigveda 5.40 — one of the earliest known references to a solar eclipse.

Anasuya's Chastity Test

(Bhagavata Purana, Markandeya Purana): The wives of the Trimurti (Saraswati, Lakshmi, Parvati) became jealous of Anasuya's fame as the most chaste woman.
