Key Life Events

Disciple of Vishwamitra

Galava served Vishwamitra with utmost devotion for many years, studying at his ashram.

The Guru Dakshina demand

When Galava completed his studies and asked what guru dakshina (teacher's fee) he should offer, Vishwamitra -- known for his fierce nature -- initially said "nothing." But when Galava insisted, Vishwamitra in irritation demanded **800 white horses, each with one black ear** (ashta-shata ashvam shyama-karna). This was an almost impossibly rare and expensive gift.

Despair and Garuda's help

Galava was devastated by this impossible demand. He wandered in despair until he encountered **Garuda** (the divine eagle, Vishnu's mount). Garuda, taking pity on him, carried Galava on his back and flew him to various kings to seek the horses.

King Yayati's gift

Galava approached **King Yayati**, who no longer had wealth but offered his beautiful daughter **Madhavi** instead, saying she could bear sons for kings in exchange for horses.

Madhavi's sacrifice

Madhavi was given temporarily to three kings -- **Haryashva** (king of Ayodhya), **Divodasa** (king of Kashi), and **Ushinara** (king of Bhojanagari) -- each of whom gave 200 horses in exchange, and Madhavi bore each a son. After bearing three sons, Madhavi's youth was restored each time (she had the boon of restored virginity). But only 600 horses were obtained.

Resolution

Unable to find the final 200 horses, Galava offered the 600 horses plus Madhavi herself to Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra accepted, had a son **Ashtaka** with Madhavi, and then released both the horses and Madhavi. Madhavi chose to retire to the forest as an ascetic.
