Key Life Events

Alliance with Indra

Kutsa formed a close personal bond with Indra, the king of the Devas. This is mentioned in numerous Rigvedic hymns (RV 1.106, 1.174-175, 4.16, etc.).

Defeat of Shushna

Kutsa's most famous exploit was his battle against the demon **Shushna** (a drought demon/Asura). With Indra's help, Kutsa defeated Shushna, releasing waters and restoring fertility. RV 1.175: "Indra and Kutsa vanquished Shushna." This is both a mythological battle and a cosmic event (releasing rains).

Riding Indra's chariot

Kutsa rode on Indra's chariot drawn by the divine horses (hari), accompanying him into battle. In the Rigveda, they ride together through the sky.

Mistaken identity episode

Kutsa resembled Indra so closely that **Sachi** (Indra's wife, Indrani) or Indra's charioteer reportedly could not tell them apart. This is referenced in RV 4.1.10 and elaborated in Brahmana literature.

Conflict with Indra

Some later texts mention that the resemblance led to a rift -- possibly involving Sachi. This adds complexity to the Kutsa-Indra relationship.
