⚡Key Life Events
Student of Parashara
Maitreya was Parashara's foremost disciple. Parashara (son of Shakti, grandson of Vashishtha, and father of Vyasa) was one of the greatest sages. Maitreya received from him the entire knowledge that became the Vishnu Purana.
The Vishnu Purana dialogue
Maitreya's questions to Parashara structure the entire text: - Creation of the universe (Sarga) - Secondary creation (Pratisarga) - Genealogies of gods and sages (Vamsha) - Cosmic cycles and Manu periods (Manvantara) - Genealogies of royal dynasties (Vamshanucharita) - Liberation (Moksha) Maitreya asks the right questions at each juncture, making the knowledge accessible.
Teaching Vidura
In the Bhagavata Purana (Books 3-4), Maitreya meets Vidura at a pilgrimage site and teaches him about creation, the nature of the self, the stories of Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada, and the path to liberation. This places Maitreya as a bridge between the Puranic age and the Mahabharata age.
Presence in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
A Maitreya appears in the philosophical discussions that form this great Upanishad, engaging with Yajnavalkya's teachings on Atman and Brahman.
