Conquering Death at Age 16 (Markandeya Purana; Shiva Purana; Bhagavata Purana)
As Markandeya's 16th birthday approached, he intensified his Shiva Linga worship. On the destined day, Yama (god of death) arrived personally on his buffalo mount. Yama threw his pasha (noose of death) around Markandeya's neck, but Markandeya was clinging to the Shiva Linga.
Witnessing the Cosmic Dissolution (Bhagavata Purana XII.8-10; Mahabharata)
As a Chiranjeevi, Markandeya witnessed the pralaya (cosmic dissolution). When the entire universe was dissolved in the cosmic ocean, Markandeya wandered alone through the endless dark waters. He encountered the divine infant — **Bala Mukunda** (baby Krishna/Vishnu) — resting on a banyan leaf floating on the cosmic waters, sucking his toe.
