मराठी ब्राह्मण गोत्र (Marathi Brahmin Gotra)
Maharashtra has a rich and diverse Brahmin heritage, with several distinct sub-communities each carrying their own Gotra traditions. The major Brahmin groups in Maharashtra include:
- Deshastha Brahmins (देशस्थ) — the largest Marathi Brahmin group, found across the Deccan plateau
- Konkanastha Brahmins (कोकणस्थ) — also known as Chitpavan Brahmins, from the Konkan coast
- Karhade Brahmins (कऱ्हाडे) — from the Karad region of western Maharashtra
- Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu (CKP) — a Kshatriya-origin community that follows Brahminical Gotra traditions
Each group has characteristic Gotras, though all draw from the same pan-Indian pool of Vedic Gotras.
Deshastha Brahmin Gotras
Deshastha Brahmins (देशस्थ ब्राह्मण) are the most numerous Brahmin community in Maharashtra, found throughout the Deccan plateau (Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Solapur regions). They are divided into two major branches:
- Rigvedi Deshastha — follow the Rigveda
- Yajurvedi Deshastha — follow the Yajurveda (more common)
Common Deshastha Gotras include:
- Kashyap — the most widespread
- Bharadwaj — very common
- Kaundinya — characteristic of Deshastha families
- Vatsa — common in Yajurvedi branch
- Shandilya
- Kaushika (Vishwamitra branch)
Konkanastha (Chitpavan) Brahmin Gotras
Konkanastha Brahmins — popularly called Chitpavan (चित्पावन, "purified by the funeral pyre" — referring to a mythological origin story) — are from the Konkan coastal region of Maharashtra (Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg districts). They are known as a highly educated community that produced many prominent figures in modern Indian history, including Lokmanya Tilak and Nathuram Godse.
Common Konkanastha Gotras include:
- Bharadwaj — the most common Konkanastha Gotra
- Vashishtha
- Kashyap
- Kaushika (Vishwamitra)
- Gargya (Garg branch)
- Atri
Konkanastha Brahmins follow the Rigveda primarily, which is reflected in their Gotra distribution (Bharadwaj and Vashishtha being Rigveda Gotras).
Karhade Brahmin Gotras
Karhade Brahmins (कऱ्हाडे ब्राह्मण) originated from the Karad region (Satara district) and are one of the smaller but culturally significant Marathi Brahmin communities. They are known for their scholarship and priestly roles.
Common Karhade Gotras include:
The Saraswat Brahmins of Goa and Coastal Maharashtra
Goud Saraswat Brahmins (GSB) and Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmins are found in Goa, coastal Karnataka, and southern Maharashtra. They claim descent from Saraswats who migrated south from the Saraswati river region.
Common Saraswat Gotras include:
Pravara Recitation in Marathi Brahmin Tradition
In Maharashtra, the Gotra and Pravara are recited in Marathi-inflected Sanskrit at weddings and ceremonies. The format follows the standard Vedic pattern:
"[Gotra]-asya gotrasya, [Pravara chain]-pravara-anvitasya..."
One distinctive practice in Maharashtrian Brahmin tradition is the Kula Devata (कुलदेवता) — the family's patron deity — which is as important as the Gotra in defining family identity. A Kashyap Gotra family might worship Tulja Bhavani, while another Kashyap Gotra family worships Mahalakshmi.
