पाराशर गोत्र (Parashar Gotra)
The Parashar Gotra — also spelled Parashara Gotra — traces its origin to Rishi Parashara (पराशर), one of the most prolific and influential sages in all of Vedic literature. Rishi Parashara is revered as:
- Author of the Vishnu Purana — the earliest of the 18 major Puranas
- Father of Vyasa — the compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata
- Author of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra — the foundational text of Vedic astrology (Jyotisha)
- Author of the Parashara Smriti — a law code governing Dharmic conduct
The Founding Rishi: Rishi Parashara
Rishi Parashara was the grandson of Vashishtha — making this lineage a branch of the ancient Vashishtha family tree. His father was Rishi Shakti (Shaktri), and his mother was Adrishyanti.
The Birth of Vyasa
The most celebrated episode in Parashara's life is the birth of Vyasa (Vedavyasa). While crossing the Yamuna River on a ferry, Parashara encountered the young fisherwoman Satyavati (also called Matsyagandha — "she who smells of fish"). Through Parashara's blessing, Satyavati was transformed — her fish-smell was replaced by a divine fragrance, and she was elevated from her low-birth status. Their union on an island in the Yamuna produced Krishnadwaipayana — who would later be known as Vedavyasa (the compiler of the Vedas) and Krishna Dvaipayana (the dark-complexioned, island-born one).
Vyasa went on to classify the single Veda into four (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, Atharvaveda), compose the Mahabharata and 18 Puranas, and establish the Vedanta philosophy through the Brahmasutras.
The Vishnu Purana and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra
The Vishnu Purana — composed or transmitted by Parashara to his disciple Maitreya — is one of the sattvic Puranas (in the Vaishnava classification) and contains a comprehensive cosmology, genealogy of kings and sages, and devotional teachings on Vishnu.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) is the master text of Jyotisha (Vedic Astrology). It covers:
- The 12 Rashis (zodiac signs) and their properties
- The 9 Grahas (planets) and their significations
- The 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions)
- The Dasha systems (planetary period calculations)
- Methods for chart interpretation and prediction
Every Vedic astrologer in practice today follows principles laid down in the BPHS.
Pravara and Veda Affiliation
- Gotra: Parashar (Parashara)
- Pravara: Vashishtha, Shakti, Parashara (3-pravara, tracing back to the Vashishtha lineage)
- Veda: Rigveda
- Gotra Devanagari: पाराशर गोत्र
The Pravara of the Parashar Gotra clearly shows its Vashishtha-branch origin: the three ancestors are Vashishtha (the patriarch), Shakti (Parashara's father), and Parashara himself.
Relationship to Vashishtha Gotra
The Parashar Gotra is a sub-branch of the Vashishtha Gotra lineage. When a lineage produces a sufficiently eminent sage, a new Gotra is established in his name. Parashara was eminent enough to be the founder of his own Gotra.
Families belonging to the Parashar Gotra may sometimes encounter the Vashishtha Pravara reference — this reflects the ancestral connection.
