Satras of Assam

Satra, Ekasarana

Assam

Satras initiate lay people into the Ekasarana tradition and keep them as disciples through the village namghars. The Asom Sattra Mahasabha counts 862 satras (other sources give 500 to about 1,000), in four samhatis: Brahma, Purusha, Nika and Kala. This is the clearest case in eastern India of a family belonging to an institution.

How a family belongs

A family belongs to a satra as its disciples, through its village namghar.
