Questions
Does a family belong to a matth?
Often, by hereditary allegiance through its tradition: Smarta Saraswat families to Kavale or Chitrapur, Vaishnava Saraswats to Kashi or Partagali, Madhva families to an Udupi matha. Initiation is personal, so a person's guru can differ from the family's matth.
Does any matth keep a list of families?
Very few. Kavale Math runs a devotee-family registration and Chitrapur Math's local sabhas count member families. The Shankaracharya peeths publish no roll of disciples.
Who is the Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath?
The succession is before the Supreme Court. Vanshmool shows both claimants with dated sources and does not pick one.
