वेद
The 4 Vedas & Their Gotras
Each Hindu Gotra has a Veda affiliation inherited from its founding Rishi. Explore the four Vedas and discover which Gotras belong to each Vedic tradition.
ऋग्वेद
Rigveda
The Veda of Hymns
The oldest of the four Vedas, containing 1,028 hymns (suktas) addressed to the Vedic deities. Most Gotras affiliated with the Rigveda are of the Angirasa, Bhrigu, and Vashishtha lineages.
यजुर्वेद
Yajurveda
The Veda of Ritual Formulae
The Veda of ritual formulae and prose prayers used during Vedic sacrifices. Divided into Krishna (Black) and Shukla (White) Yajurveda. Many Gotras of the Kashyapa and Kanva lineages follow this Veda.
सामवेद
Samaveda
The Veda of Melodies
The Veda of melodies and chants, largely derived from the Rigveda hymns but set to musical notation for ritual use. Gotras following the Samaveda are associated with the Udgatri priests in Vedic ritual.
अथर्ववेद
Atharvaveda
The Veda of Sacred Wisdom
The Veda of magical formulas, healing hymns, and philosophical speculations. The Angirasa lineage is especially prominent in the Atharvaveda tradition, which encompasses both healing and cosmic knowledge.
