The Veda of Ritual Formulae
About the Yajurveda
The Yajurveda is the Veda of ritual formulae (yajus) and prose prayers recited by the Adhvaryu priest during the performance of Vedic sacrifices (yajnas). It is divided into two branches: the Krishna (Black) Yajurveda, which includes commentary interspersed with the mantras, and the Shukla (White) Yajurveda, which keeps the mantras and commentary separate. Gotras affiliated with the Yajurveda include the Kashyapa lineage and many Kanva-branch Gotras. The Yajurveda is the most widely recited Veda in modern Hindu ritual practice.
