Etymology
The name 'Tingal' (टिंगल) is one of the eighteen Agrawal clan names whose Sanskrit etymology is not definitively established. Some scholars suggest a connection to 'tila' (sesame) or 'tikta' (pungent/sharp), possibly reflecting an early association with spice or sesame trade. Others derive it from a Prakrit dialectal form. The name remains a distinctive marker of Agrawal gotra identity.

The Merchant King Who Chose Peace
The transformation of King Agrasena from a Kshatriya warrior to the founder of a merchant community is the foundational narrative for all eighteen Agrawal gotras including Tingal. During a great yajna, Agrasena saw the suffering of the animals being sacrificed and was moved by compassion. When Goddess Lakshmi appeared and told him that true prosperity comes not from conquest but from trade and mutual aid, Agrasena renounced his weapons and established Agroha as a city of merchants. He taught his eighteen sons — the founders of the eighteen gotras — that wealth earned through honest trade and shared through community welfare was more lasting than any kingdom won by the sword. This story continues to define the Agrawal identity today.
