Key Life Events

Assisting in Creation

As the first mind-born son, Marichi was tasked by Brahma with helping populate the universe. He became a Prajapati and fathered Kashyapa, who in turn fathered all living beings. Thus, Marichi is the patriarch of patriarchs — the grandfather of all creation through Kashyapa.

The Curse of Becoming a Stone

(*Shiva Purana*, *Brahma Vaivarta Purana*): In one account, Marichi asked his wife Dharmavrata (or Sambhuti) to press his feet while he slept. When Brahma arrived, she had to choose between serving her husband and honoring Brahma. She chose to honor Brahma.
