Rishi Laugakshi

Laugakshi is a rishi-scholar associated with grammar (vyakarana) and philosophy, with particular connections to the Paippalada Samhita of the Atharvaveda. The name "Laugakshi" is a patronymic meaning "descendant of Lugaksha" or "descendant of one with notable eyes" (locana/lochana = eyes).

The Paippalada Samhita is one of the two surviving shakhas (recensions) of the Atharvaveda (the other being the Shaunaka Samhita). It was preserved primarily in the Odisha/Eastern India tradition. Laugakshi's connection to this tradition places him in the intellectual world of the Atharvaveda, which deals with practical rituals, healing, protection mantras, and speculative philosophy.

In some traditions, Laugakshi is also connected to the Nyaya (Logic) tradition. The Laugakshi Bhaskara is a known philosopher, possibly a descendant of this lineage.
