Kashyap Gotra — Overview

The Kashyap Gotra (कश्यप गोत्र) is one of the oldest and most widespread Gotras in the Hindu tradition. It traces its lineage to Rishi Kashyapa (ऋषि कश्यप), one of the Saptarishis — the Seven Great Sages of ancient India who are considered the fathers of all Vedic civilization.

The Kashyap Gotra is found across virtually every region of India and in nearly every community that follows the Gotra system. It is often described as a Pan-India Gotra due to its extraordinary geographic and communal spread.

Pravara of Kashyap Gotra

The Pravara (प्रवर) is the specific chain of ancestral Rishis recited during Vedic ceremonies. It is the spiritual "address" of your lineage within the Gotra.

The Pravara of the Kashyap Gotra is:

Kashyapa · Aavatsaara · Naidhruva

This three-part Pravara (tri-pravara) identifies the direct ancestral chain from Rishi Kashyapa. During Vedic rituals such as sandhyavandanam, homa, and the wedding ceremony, members of the Kashyap Gotra recite this Pravara to identify themselves spiritually.

Pravara recitation: "Kashyapasya gotrasya, Kashyapa-Aavatsaara-Naidhruva-trayarsheyapravara-anvitasya..."

Who was Rishi Kashyapa?

Rishi Kashyapa (ऋषि कश्यप) is one of the most important figures in Vedic and Puranic literature. He is counted among the Saptarishis — the seven primordial sages who compose the Vedic hymns and establish the spiritual order of the universe.

Kashyap Gotra and Marriage

Followers of the sa-gotra prohibition (same-Gotra marriage restriction) cannot marry within the Kashyap Gotra. Since the Kashyap Gotra is so widespread, this means a large number of potential partners are traditionally excluded. In practice, many families verify the Pravara — if the Pravara differs, some traditions permit the marriage even when the Gotra name is shared.
